An update to this piece
I recently bought a copy of Clip Studio Paint Pro (AKA Manga Studio 5), the latest release of which includes a new tool called the Contour Line Paint Tool. This tool automatically fills in shaped gradients between colored regions, which, among other things, allows for much easier and smoother shading than ever before. I'd been longing for years for someone to implement this exact feature, so it especially excited me to find out that not only did Manga Studio have it, but that the program was on sale for only 15 bucks (sadly, this sale has now ended).
This is the first pic that I tried this new tool on. I'd wanted to do smooth shading on it before, but the methods I tried were tedious, and I could never get it to look the way I wanted. Now, thanks to the creators of Manga Studio, you can now finally get to see Gabe and his cocks the way they were meant to be seen. :D
Of course, I'd greatly prefer to be able to do this kind of shading with vectors, but I haven't been able to hack it with the options available. Blends are too limited, gradient meshes are awkward, and diffusion curves, while potentially suitable, still haven't made their way into any vector graphics program.
Until then, the future beckons, and, as usual, it appears to be full of dog dicks.
